You probably found out about the mold in your attic the hard way. Maybe a home inspector flagged it during a sale. Your HVAC tech might have mentioned it while servicing the unit, or a dark stain finally bled through your bedroom ceiling. Attic mold is almost always a moisture problem hiding behind a ventilation problem. In Madison, the usual suspect is warm, damp indoor air leaking up into a cold attic through gaps around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, and the attic hatch. That moist air hits the freezing roof deck, turns to frost all winter, and then drips down into your insulation when things finally thaw in March. Ice dams along the eaves push more water up under the shingles on top of that. Bathroom exhaust fans vented straight into the attic instead of out through the roof make it worse, and so do blocked soffit vents, weak ridge ventilation, and a slow roof leak that's been going a few seasons.
